Chapter 17A

1982

“Are you a doctor?” the guard asked, looking at me.

“Yes, I am,” I stammered, standing up.

On a closer look, I realized that he was the guard who had pushed me into the cell. His demeanour had completely transformed.

“One of our officers is in danger. Can you come immediately please?” he requested, opening the door.

My doctor instincts took over and I walked out briskly.

“What happened?” I asked when we were in the hallway.

“The man collapsed all of a sudden and is unable to breathe.”

“Do you have a medical kit?” I asked as we hurried round the corner.

“Yes Doctor.”

When we entered the waiting room, I saw the patient. It was him, the hefty guard who had frisked me. He was lying on the floor, choking, unable to speak. His eyes told the agony he was going through.

“What happened?” the Jailor, who had just arrived, asked as I bent down to take a look.

“Was he eating when he collapsed?” I asked.

One of the guards said, “No.”

But, the hefty man nodded his affirmation and contradicted the guard.

I am glad he did that because I immediately understood what the problem was.

“Can you please make him stand?” I said with a sense of urgency.

Owing to his weight, it required three of us to get him standing. Once he was erect, I embraced him from behind. It was a very uncomfortable posture, and despite the seriousness of the issue, a couple of people in the room laughed.

“Kindly support him by his shoulders and ensure that he does not fall down,” I instructed the guards, ignoring my discomfort.

Then, I made a fist with one hand and placed it on his abdomen. Following that, I held my fist with the other hand and started thrusting the fist upward and inward. The guard was very fat, and I was not making enough impact to produce the desired result.

Thinking quickly, I asked the Jailor to hold my fist and thrust hard. Standing in front of the patient, the Jailor held my fist, and putting all his power, helped me thrust harder. After a minute, a small piece of bone that was stuck in the windpipe came out, and the hefty guard started breathing.

“You may stop now,” I told the Jailor, and he instantly complied.

It took just five minutes for the hefty guard to recover completely, and everyone looked at me with great admiration. Some of the prisoners, who were waiting to be checked into the jail started clapping and everyone in the room joined them. I was very embarrassed and wanted to run to a corner and hide myself.

“Doctor, that was a miracle. Thank you very much for saving my guard. My name is Anwar Khasim. I am in charge here,” the Jailor introduced himself.

Not knowing what to say, I simply nodded and shook his hand.

“Get back to work,” the Jailor told the guards, before turning to me.

“Let me walk you to your cell Doctor,” he said politely.

As we walked towards the cell, he asked, “What exactly happened to him?”

“A small piece of bone was stuck in his airway.
